The Cole Porter Story
By Vov Dylan and Glenn Amer
Violinist Vov Dylan and Pianist Glenn Amer have created a new album and live show celebrating the music of Cole Porter. Without Words A Tribute To Cole Porter.
Cole Porter created some of the most memorable melodies of the 20th century and these have been handpicked by these two incredible musicians and entertainers to present you a walk through the hits of the 30’s and 40’s, songs so popular that they have been re-recorded and released every year ever since he wrote them.
The classically trained young Cole was drawn to musical theatre. Although he grew up on a 740 acre fruit farm and it was against his grandfather’s wishes, he pursued music. He started to achieve a level of success in the 1920’s. By the 1930’s he was one of the major songwriters for Broadway.
Many artists have re-recorded Porter hits, and dozens have released entire albums of his songs, including Ella Fitzgerald, who recorded two albums exclusively covering his songs, as well as Oscar Peterson, Anita O’Day and Juie London who all did albums covering his lyrical works, and Stephanie Grappelli and YoYo Ma who did an album celebrating his instrumental works.
Other performers such as Frank Sinatra and David Byrne have covered his work. In 1990 a fantastic album called Red Hot + Blue was released to raise money for AIDS research and included artists such as Annie Lennox, U2, Sinead O’Connor, Nene Cherry, Fine Young Cannibals, Tom Waits and other 80’s era heavy hitters. The album sold over a million copies worldwide. In the same year Dionne Warwick released an album of his songs, bringing Cole Porter firmly back into the minds of music lovers worldwide.

A little bit about Glenn Amer.
It is said that he has the fingers of Liberace and the voice of Mario Lanza, to watch him in concert is an absolute treat.
His musical pedigree is longer than my arm. He has been performing in Australia and abroad from a tender age. He was on the staff of the Australian Institute of Music (voice) and a guest coach for the National Academy of Music (voice), he is part of Opera Australia as a pianist and vocalist. He was appointed head of faculty, Piano division, at the Hume Conservatorium in 2020. When he’s in Sydney, he can be heard playing the magnificent three manual pipe organ at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Cremorne, (where Glenn is the Director of Music), every Sunday at 9am.
Glenn has been featured as a headline performer on The Regent, Cunard, Silversea, Royal Caribbean, Crystal, Norwegian, Celebrity, Orient, Princess, Holland America, NHK, Saga, Oceania and Seabourn cruise lines and as such has performed and toured throughout the world.
His flamboyant Liberace style of piano playing has proved extremely popular with audiences who are also impressed with his Robert Goulet/Mario Lanza style singing.
For many years Glenn was the exclusive accompanist to soprano Rita Hunter CBE and dramatic tenor Horst Hoffmann. He regularly appears in concert with Yvonne Kenny and David Hobson as well as many other equally renowned singers.
In 1997 Glenn performed for the Australian Prime Minister (the Hon. John Howard), at Wrest Point Casino in Hobart, Tasmania. Two years later (1999), an invitation came to perform at the Westpac Master Musician’s Series held at Somerset College, Surfer’s Paradise. A repeat performance was requested and undertaken in September 2000. During the 1990s Glenn cut pianola (player piano) rolls for the Mastertouch Piano Roll Company in Sydney, and in 2009 made acoustic cylinder recordings for the Vulcan Cylinder Record Company in England.
In October 2001 Glenn was invited to perform at Parliament House, Canberra and at the opening of the National Wine Centre in Adelaide. Also, in 2001, Glenn undertook a month long tour of New Zealand, where he performed for over 5000 people in a single day at Christchurch Town Hall for the Christchurch Casino. A more recent highlight was “Opera on the Beach” at Cronulla in Sydney in front of an audience of over 20,000 people.
His 2013 ABC Classics recording with the Seven Sopranos (which features Glenn’s arrangements, conducting and piano playing) rocketed to number 2 in the classical charts in the week it was released and shortly after this he joined Opera Australia as a pianist and conductor. He continued to make recordings and travel the world presenting his highly rated Headline Show.
Glenn is one of Australia’s most cherished musical prodigies and his talent and versatility shines through in The Cole Porter Tribute Show, Without Words
